MS in Finance Program Hits Top 10 in First Major Ranking

Text: M.S. Finance No. 8 in the U.S.

The Master of Science in Finance (MSF) at the McCombs School of Business landed at No. 8 among U.S. programs in the Financial Times (FT) 2017 ranking of MSF degrees worldwide.

This was the first time the Texas Master of Science in Finance, a new program at McCombs whose inaugural class graduated in 2013, participated in a major ranking.

"We are delighted to see the Texas MSF fare so well," says program director Joe Hahn. He attributes its success to the dedicated efforts of the program's many stakeholders: current and former students, faculty, staff, and industry partners on the MSF advisory council.

The Texas MSF is an intensive 10-month master's degree that offers college graduates with strong quantitative skills — but little work experience or exposure to finance — the opportunity to excel in the finance industry. Hahn describes the program's unique curriculum of analytical and quantitative modeling as "the intersection of finance theory and application" and says there is currently a critical need in the industry for these graduates.

In FT's seventh annual ranking, the top three U.S. schools were, respectively, MIT, Brandeis, and Boston College.

McCombs tied for 46th place in the worldwide tally. The top spots went, respectively, to EDHEC Business School, HEC Paris, and ESSEC Business School, all headquartered in France. FT's business school rankings are known for their global diversity, with 80 percent of the currently rated MSF programs located outside the United States.

FT's methodology includes alumni input on salary and career progress, school diversity issues, and international experience and research. For the current ranking, FT surveyed MSF graduates of 2014.

Among online media, the Texas MSF also enjoys top 10 status. The program hit No. 9 in the 2017 MSF ranking from the Financial Engineer Times, which listed 95 U.S. programs using student quality and employment data. McCombs is one of only five programs nationwide (and the sole public school) to make the top 10 in both rankings.
