(L-R) Angelise Hadley and Tom JacksonAUSTIN, Texas — Jon Brumley Texas Venture Labs (TVL) and the Texas MBA program announced two 2017 TVL scholarship recipients, Angelise Hadley and Tom Jackson, at the fifth annual TVL Scholarship Competition on February 24 at the McCombs School of Business. Hadley and Jackson will both receive a scholarship for $20,000 in the form of $10,000 per year in the two-year MBA program.

The TVL Scholarship Competition is a unique business pitch competition where potential MBA students pitch their business plan for a scholarship to the Texas MBA program in a ‘Shark Tank’ like environment. This year’s winners competed against 14 other prospective Texas MBA students from around the world.

“I was incredibly impressed with the quality of the applicants this year,” said Harlan Beverly, assistant director of Texas Venture Labs. “The caliber of startups and presentations get better every year.”

Hadley pitched her business plan for EmbraceBox, a DIY subscription box geared towards girls with curly or textured hair. Each month, curly hair girls receive a box of ingredients and a recipe to create and store their own hair products with the help of a parent or guardian.

Jackson pitched his business plan for Locus Tracking, a company that has developed software that enables smartphone users to control their phone with their eyes.

Third place went to John Grellner, who will receive a $6,000 scholarship for his business pitch for Talos training and fourth place went to Peter Loukas who will receive a $4,000 scholarship for his business pitch for Commissary Network.

The finals judges included inaugural TVL scholarship winner Courtney Leffall, MBA ‘15; Tina Mabley, MBA ’98, assistant dean of the Texas MBA program; Rob Adams, director of Texas Venture Labs; and Chris Meakin, senior lecturer at the McCombs School of Business.
